Lyrical Annotation Documenting Key Ideas

This post contains the rough ideas of the proposed composition of my music video spread across three pages and cut into sections.

Referring to the sections please comment on your understanding of the concept , use of shot types , location and overall effectiveness to enable me to progress in my project in terms of shooting and potentially creating a new idea.

Music Video Schedule and Shot Plan

Shot Plans - For Stop motion
1.

Shot Plan 2

Decided Video Type - Section Two Live Action.

I have provisionally decided I want to use these shots in particular for my life action because from my research from stop motion I have found these shots don't occur as :-

  1. They inhibit the authenticity factor.
  2. Hard to achieve shots eg.high angle with keeping the camera perfectly still.
  3. They are not necessary to there success as the action close maintains focus because it is quick and edgy.

These shots are as follows:-

  • Eye line match
  • Tracking / Zoom Tracking.
  • extreme long shot
  • Point of views (limited not impossible.)

The shot which I believe will fit well and entails all these shots combined is a closing and opening a door.

Decided Video Type - Section One (Stop Motion Lego)

After deciding what avenue i was going to pursue with my video i deemed it important to gain an awareness of the 'do's and don'ts' of stop motion video for example :-

  1. How to use you equipment/location correctly to get the best possible results and what i would need to obtain in terms of equipment. (bellow is a video which describes the basics of setting the sense for a stop motion video in terms of a tutorial which i found very useful in terms of such thing as lighting.
  2. Then i wanted to understand the methods of making the movements as authentic as possible in terms of how much to move a Lego piece , not to make movements to jerky etc. Again i found a tutorial that explains the basic principles of vital moves such as walking as this tutorial shows.
  3. Finally I watched a few examples of stop motion videos of a number of different genre of song , story lines and didn't view any of my chosen song choice as I didn't want it to damage my thought process. (bellow is a few examples of videos and the pros's and con's of each I found to help me learned from errors made and gain experience and advice.

Finalised Song - Type Of Music Video

After allot of research in to different music videos I am stuck between two methods these are :-
1.Stop motion with Lego.
2.Live action
3.Story

Please vote on the corresponding blog and leave and comment on why you preference certain methods.

Feedback
After gaining as well as a poll I proposed my ideas via word of mouth to my peers of varying age 16-18 about there opinions.
The common consensus was that they were inspired and found stop motion fascinating to watch. So on the other hand a small proportion , believed some live action was vital to a music video in realistic form. However all agreed that a storyline was necessary especially in terms of stop motion for the video to be effective.

After taking these points into consideration I decided to combine the three methods as :-
1.stop motion seems the best method and the most popular.Where as there is limitations in terms of shot types which is a concern.
2.Life gives the stop motion a sense of reality , this is very important in terms of USP and authenticity. Also it will enable me to bridge the gap of variation of shots which are restricted in the stop motion as well as movement to different aspects of the location.
3.Storyline as my peers suggest is vital especially when trying to combine to two diverse methods and will give the shooting structure , interest , direction and a USP more effectively also allowing a wide range of shot types and movement.

Planning Process Outline

Now I have completed my research and have decided on a final song I am now going to be concertrating on the planning stage of this project. This is a vital stage and it determines the success and authenticity of your project and therefore is crucial to be considered in depth.Bellow i have made a list of the sub-sections i will be looking into over the next week or so.
(I have attempted to post these in the order the need to be approached however there maybe altercations depending on the outcome of each section and this will be notified and explained.)

Annotated Lyrics - Bases of video - shot types , storyline, intended outcome , prompt words.
Location shots - Where , when , who , why Storyboards -Shot types , location , genre , time , when , where ,who , genre , storyline
Animatics- shot types and story combined = whether project works / flows
Shot Planning - To enable you to keep on track of what is done and what needs to be done ,Continuous plan - something goes incorrectly, so you can do for example all the night shots together and day shots.

Shot types Of Different Genres

I am beginning to explore different shot types, which I deem effective or which I am considering using for my own project for a number of reasons :-
1. Unique
2. Effective
3. Intriguing to the eye.

The main shot which is effective and used throughout from 1.30 minutes - 4.28 (end) is used a a story mode to show the story backward. This is effective as it makes the movements made more prominant and shows how something so simply different is so effective and intriguing to the target audience.

The Feeling - Music Video / Advert

I have been researching less live music videos and looking more at CGI and animation together with other approaches I could take which are still effective.
What i found was the advert for Toyota by the Feeling which is very simplistic but effective.

The altercation i would make is :-

  • I would use a different song not car orientated eg. no establishing shots of the car.
  • I would use animated characters or models such as Lego (look at 45 seconds mainly)
  • I would use a combination of the elements used in Coldplay - Life In Technicolor (as shown bellow)

This method is very effective as :-

  1. Unique
  2. Simplistic but effective
  3. Represents live action simply which wouldn't be effective if was just life action so it creates something so simple so effective.
  4. Association is very strong for the band.

Final Song Choice and Copyright Investigation

Daft Punk - 'One More Time'

Regarding copyright law I have contacted both strains of the artist record label and asked expressive permission to use the music in my personal study project in terms of my A level media studies.

Bellow is a copy of the email issued to the company regarding the legitimacy of my project.
