Third Draft Of Final Products In Terms Of Progression

These are Three of my designed inside selves for posters on the inside sleeve:

I now require audience feedback to decide which is most:
  1. Aesthetically pleasing
  2. Most appropriate for purpose.
  3. Most attractive and liked by my target audience.
  4. Uses a different shot type than that of my cover and back cover of my Digi-Pack.
  5. Which design is most authentic yet original at the same time?

Please leave comments and suggestions in terms of these target questions above as it will enable me to produce a more effective product which is direct to my target audience not my own personal preference or use the Questionnaire bellow which have more promotes.

This is my first mock up of my inside sleeve and CD spine, however I am not entirely happy with there outcome as I believe there is a missing element on both products yet desire input to improve this,so please leave your suggestions bellow.

The main criticisms were applicable to both products:-
  1. There is a lack of the presence of the unique selling point of the product , the Lego men.
  2. There isn't enough information on the inside sleeve to be sustainable for the coloured lines to compensate.
  3. The right hand corner of the inner sleeve needs something interesting eg. Lego to distract away from the empty space.

Positives

  1. Clever use of intertextuality eg. the logo, the coloured lines inspired from the logo.
  2. The typeface size is in proportion for both products and is clear.
  3. The information is useful and necessary to such products.
  4. The colours used are bright and exciting and reflect the genre of the music.

Second Draft Of Final Products To Show Progression and Use of Audience Advice.

Front Cover Changes Made :
As you can see I have made the daft punk logo more of a centre piece and used the aid of colour to do this from the inspiration from thew colour of the typeface.I then applied a tapper to certain strands of the disjointed titles and this gave a more dramatic look and which was more appealing to the audience and grabbed there attention.
Back cover Changes Made :

I again used the same use of diagonal boxes and colours to create a centre piece
Poster and Changes made :

I used the Questionnaire above to see the level of progression and my audiences opinion on the work I have made in terms of there criticism. On suggestion was that a spine and inside poster should be created so that is what I am working on at the moment an a description of the reasons for changes I have made are above.

Final Video Cut - Changes That Need To Be Made To Submit Project.

The final cut will be altered on the basis of these cretics :-
1.To shorten the drumming time of one particular character as it exceeds the 3 minute rule.
2. To improve the stability of the first 20 seconds of live action for camera stability.
3. Add some life action at the end of the film to add intertexuality and to the story of the song.
eg.
Opening of a door into party
People dancing (celebration)
Car driving off at the start to car pulling up.

Music Video Progress:- Demonstrated By Numerous Drafts and Evaluation

Bellow is a series of rough cuts of my composition of my music video to enable you to see the progression of my project and the different layers it comprises of . Therefore seeing the elements added and there effect upon the videos effect on my target audience. From this I desire for evaluation and constructive criticism to enable me to produce my final cut which compliments the song well and is professional in appearance in terms of life action , stop motion and story telling.

(Please document the noticeable change between each cut and the tweaks made and make a note of the elements / shots which are effective and those that hinder the project.)

Draft One - Rough Cut

Rough Cut Two

Rough Cut Three

Rough Cut Four -This cut has up to 5 minutes of complete footage, I shall use in my final project so this is the cut I desire the most feedback on a number of factors from composition,Mise-on-scene to editing and lighting to enable me to make the best final project i can.

Also take into account the variation of shots i use, there length and its effectiveness or hindrance.

The Rough cuts present above demonstrate my progression why making my music video due to technical difficulties such as blogger crashing why uploading videos and filtering.I completed my coursework correct to my 1st December 2009 deadline but wasn't able to post them until 9th December when the technical difficulties were corrected and this is reflected in my schedule.

Considering Possible Locations In Terms Of Storyboard and acessiablity and Schedule 2

Issues and Limitations Which occurred with the location are :

  1. Heavy snow prevented me from completing my driving scenes.

  2. Early nights made the reliance on natural light very difficult.

  3. The cold weather caused the windows to stem up which was difficult to 100 percent to combat.

  4. The accessibility of using a tripod within the car.

  5. The small place in which the location provided was very confined.

Here are several images bellow which represent the issues i was confronted with.

Also which was a big issue was the early approach of dusk reducing light availability as my product relies on sun light to be effective.

This signifies the end of my planning process and the transition in construction and my organisation and process up to this point.

Practice Shot - Lego Man Singing , Fast Drumming , Sideways Shots

I have intentionally used blue pen to show the method used to make the Lego man supposedly sing / talk and the mouth go up and down.

Lyrical Annotation Documenting Key Ideas

This post contains the rough ideas of the proposed composition of my music video spread across three pages and cut into sections.

Referring to the sections please comment on your understanding of the concept , use of shot types , location and overall effectiveness to enable me to progress in my project in terms of shooting and potentially creating a new idea.

Music Video Schedule and Shot Plan

Shot Plans - For Stop motion
1.

Shot Plan 2

Decided Video Type - Section Two Live Action.

I have provisionally decided I want to use these shots in particular for my life action because from my research from stop motion I have found these shots don't occur as :-

  1. They inhibit the authenticity factor.
  2. Hard to achieve shots eg.high angle with keeping the camera perfectly still.
  3. They are not necessary to there success as the action close maintains focus because it is quick and edgy.

These shots are as follows:-

  • Eye line match
  • Tracking / Zoom Tracking.
  • extreme long shot
  • Point of views (limited not impossible.)

The shot which I believe will fit well and entails all these shots combined is a closing and opening a door.

Decided Video Type - Section One (Stop Motion Lego)

After deciding what avenue i was going to pursue with my video i deemed it important to gain an awareness of the 'do's and don'ts' of stop motion video for example :-

  1. How to use you equipment/location correctly to get the best possible results and what i would need to obtain in terms of equipment. (bellow is a video which describes the basics of setting the sense for a stop motion video in terms of a tutorial which i found very useful in terms of such thing as lighting.
  2. Then i wanted to understand the methods of making the movements as authentic as possible in terms of how much to move a Lego piece , not to make movements to jerky etc. Again i found a tutorial that explains the basic principles of vital moves such as walking as this tutorial shows.
  3. Finally I watched a few examples of stop motion videos of a number of different genre of song , story lines and didn't view any of my chosen song choice as I didn't want it to damage my thought process. (bellow is a few examples of videos and the pros's and con's of each I found to help me learned from errors made and gain experience and advice.

Finalised Song - Type Of Music Video

After allot of research in to different music videos I am stuck between two methods these are :-
1.Stop motion with Lego.
2.Live action
3.Story

Please vote on the corresponding blog and leave and comment on why you preference certain methods.

Feedback
After gaining as well as a poll I proposed my ideas via word of mouth to my peers of varying age 16-18 about there opinions.
The common consensus was that they were inspired and found stop motion fascinating to watch. So on the other hand a small proportion , believed some live action was vital to a music video in realistic form. However all agreed that a storyline was necessary especially in terms of stop motion for the video to be effective.

After taking these points into consideration I decided to combine the three methods as :-
1.stop motion seems the best method and the most popular.Where as there is limitations in terms of shot types which is a concern.
2.Life gives the stop motion a sense of reality , this is very important in terms of USP and authenticity. Also it will enable me to bridge the gap of variation of shots which are restricted in the stop motion as well as movement to different aspects of the location.
3.Storyline as my peers suggest is vital especially when trying to combine to two diverse methods and will give the shooting structure , interest , direction and a USP more effectively also allowing a wide range of shot types and movement.

Planning Process Outline

Now I have completed my research and have decided on a final song I am now going to be concertrating on the planning stage of this project. This is a vital stage and it determines the success and authenticity of your project and therefore is crucial to be considered in depth.Bellow i have made a list of the sub-sections i will be looking into over the next week or so.
(I have attempted to post these in the order the need to be approached however there maybe altercations depending on the outcome of each section and this will be notified and explained.)

Annotated Lyrics - Bases of video - shot types , storyline, intended outcome , prompt words.
Location shots - Where , when , who , why Storyboards -Shot types , location , genre , time , when , where ,who , genre , storyline
Animatics- shot types and story combined = whether project works / flows
Shot Planning - To enable you to keep on track of what is done and what needs to be done ,Continuous plan - something goes incorrectly, so you can do for example all the night shots together and day shots.

Shot types Of Different Genres

I am beginning to explore different shot types, which I deem effective or which I am considering using for my own project for a number of reasons :-
1. Unique
2. Effective
3. Intriguing to the eye.

The main shot which is effective and used throughout from 1.30 minutes - 4.28 (end) is used a a story mode to show the story backward. This is effective as it makes the movements made more prominant and shows how something so simply different is so effective and intriguing to the target audience.

The Feeling - Music Video / Advert

I have been researching less live music videos and looking more at CGI and animation together with other approaches I could take which are still effective.
What i found was the advert for Toyota by the Feeling which is very simplistic but effective.

The altercation i would make is :-

  • I would use a different song not car orientated eg. no establishing shots of the car.
  • I would use animated characters or models such as Lego (look at 45 seconds mainly)
  • I would use a combination of the elements used in Coldplay - Life In Technicolor (as shown bellow)

This method is very effective as :-

  1. Unique
  2. Simplistic but effective
  3. Represents live action simply which wouldn't be effective if was just life action so it creates something so simple so effective.
  4. Association is very strong for the band.

Final Song Choice and Copyright Investigation

Daft Punk - 'One More Time'

Regarding copyright law I have contacted both strains of the artist record label and asked expressive permission to use the music in my personal study project in terms of my A level media studies.

Bellow is a copy of the email issued to the company regarding the legitimacy of my project.

Issues Which Have Been Present Themselves In The Research Of Songs To Use

When I have been looking into selecting my final song for my music video there is a number of issues which have come to ahead which are vital to my successful video and for preparation and creation of my video.
These are :-
1) Song artist must fit with the sex of the person in the video to be generic.
2) How many people, i will need to express the video eg. band i will need that many volunteers.
3) The nature of the genre and therefore the image of the people must correspond.

Daft Punk Song Elimination

Song Choices

X Robot Rock - no lyrics
One More Time - Maybe

Lyrics One More Time lyrics
X Burnin'-No lyrics
X Face to Face - No lyrics

Know I have eliminated various song choices from both my questionnaire and further exploring I have decided that the other songs I considered either :-
1. Had lyrics which I deemed to have no adaptable storyline or that I could create and conceivable idea . eg. All Around The World.
2.Had no lyrics just a base beat so wasn't complex enough.
3.Strong was to well known and successfully replicated eg. Harder , Faster Stronger and would almost be to stereotypical to be successful and eye catching.

This left me with one song choice... 'One More Time' by Daft Punk
So what do I like about the video ?

There are a variation of aspects which I like about 'One More Time' , but there is also some aspects I didn't like however the majority positive.
Disadvantage

  1. The style of animation / CGI is very unique and specific and almost creates a childish feel.
  2. The colours used were very old fashioned and pastel like which doesn't have such a impact and acts effectively as a story but could be conceived as a cartoon or armature video due to the factors above.

Advantages

  1. The wide use of shot types are very effective and interesting to the eye:-
  • Quick cuts are all in conjunction with the music creating sync. which is pleasing to the eye.
  • All movements of the animation are in congesting with the music therefore effective and dramatic with the beat as well as the mouths of the artists being in sync.
  • The pan shot is used to show the diversity of goings on in one area and gives a sense of life action but artificially.
  • The use of fades is very effective as i flows with the music and enables the transition between really high angle shots to extreme zooms.
  • The use of establishing shots also enables the story to flow as it acts as a scene breaker and enforces the location of the video and therefore its sci-fi theme.
  • The use of low angle shots and high angle shots also shows a clever use of variation of shots.
  • The slow motion is cleverly used through out to mimic the music but also to show the merging of the characters to make the music this is assisted by a clever use of fades in conjunction and then the speed is managed to show the tempo of the music which is really effective.
  • The extreme close up is also used to create a sense of authenticity eg. the character playing the piano.

Overall the video is very well put together and uses a variation of shots effectively and therefore uses both story mode and live action in a authentic but untrue manner. However the style of animation i dislike, however could be due to the era of the song and the genre of the music as sc-fi and electronic age.

This has given me allot of help and inspiration form my final product which when I have developed I will be posting for judgement.

Using Lyrics And The Avenues To Take

I am now beginning to move further in my research and have from the questionnaires and have began to narrow down my song choice but first I intend to do more in-depth research on the kind of approach I take in terms of the shooting of my footage.

There in principle three avenues I could take these are:-
1. Lyrical links or narrative (story) method.
2. ‘Live’ Footage
3. Abstract
4. CGI and animation.

Bellow I have put on stream the 3 sets of lyrics which at the moment are my indirect choices for my project of a music video. Please suggest any ideas which the lyrics have inspired soon I will be posting annotated versions of the lyrics with my ideas for shots and a make –up of a video to give you and idea of the path I would be taking then I will be sending out a poll to see which idea capture your interest and from this decide the path I am going to take.
