Lady Gaga Album and Single Covers Intertextuality

Lady Gaga used for her first album and subsequently her first album a very safe and stereotypical approach in terms of her presentational features and layout.
Mise on Scene
Colours used :-
The background is a block colour of black this is replicated in the single cover for ‘Jut Dance’ as intertextuality at this point for a new artist try to establish themselves ’the fame’ is critical for thee survival in the pop industry. The black on the other hand could be used to suggest there is something mysterious and different about the genre of music she has produced. Also it also could be a symbol of playing it safe in terms of creating a collaboration of music which caters for a wide target audience. Also it could also link to the general area/ time the music is played in terms of the dark of a night club, parties which usually occur at night. This links in then with the title ‘just dance’
There then is intertextuality in terms of the colours used as both mastheads and titles (artist name , single title) is written in a soft pastel blue, this creates an easy association for the audience and a specific detail to associate with the artist to increase awareness ,purchasing due to the enjoyment of the album also it is a good way to identify a source of which album the music originates to prevent double purchasing.
This trend of blue is then replicated in different spectrum's throughout as the blot blue is used in the clothing and is enforced by the bolt symbol present on the cheek of the artist this implies that the music genre is out of the blue and is here to make and entrance. Also it could be suggested to insinuate the genre and upbeat tempo of the tracks and the storm the music will make. Also it is used to start to reveal to the audience Lady Gaga personality and character beneath her music this is also replicated in her statement of dress. This creates a strong contrast against her symbol of her bright blonde hair , however due to the other symbols present it implies that she is an unconventional stereotypical blonde which is a powerful medium to have which reflects her playful approach to her music to unpredictable because her appearance is so jumbled up in stereotypes , This is again enhanced by her pink lipstick which shows her appearance was being used as a tool to gain support for both sexes. Her image is also portrayed by the symbol of ice which suggests she is cool, or they also look like diamonds which suggests that she is a huge musical talent and a gem ready to uncover.

Overall the colours used are a very powerful medium of intertextuality , which creates links between the artist and the singles present , as well as giving the audience an insight into her personality and musical genre , as well as confusing the audience into a ‘judge by the cover’ response and in this way attracts a wide audience and maintains a wide majority of popular music fans.

The layout used by both album and single cover are identical this shows effective intertextuality with the dominance of the top width of the cover by the artist’s name which is the first thing that will be seen and read by and audience and the single name directly underneath the picture which dominates the centre is the singles name. This is a very classic approach but shows the safe option of new establishing artists as it have been proven that audience respond the best to this initially, but it has been shown how adventurous ideas can be successful e.g. Mika however this is a huge risk as this can ruin a singer career as society has great memory for mistakes as well as huge success.
The camera angles used are both different with albums image of Lady Gaga’s face being a close up and the single being a at angle mid –shot ,however they are very safe images of her face to appeal via beauty and her trademark blonde hair and bolt value preference in colours but both are very effective. As the album cover with the sun glasses make Lady Gag seem compelling so the audience can’t keep their eyes off her so it creates a sustainable fan base and yet the mid-shot make her seem soft and gentle which again might be used to reflect her personality or on the other hand confuse the audience of the kind of music she produces as well as playing with her fun and creative nature why playing the approach safe as it is her ‘break’.
An example of Lady later singles show her creative side as well as a reflection of the unusual lyric choices as she is now deemed established she has the wide bredth to explore more daring ideas, which work as she knows what her target audience want and what they will expect.
