Mika Offical Poster Analysis

This poster is an official gig poster and bears little intertextuality to the teaser poster which was very safe in its approach however this poster replicates a different dimension of the artist’s music.
The colours used are of a different dimension, however again they are of strong constitution ,but the influence is that of the 70’s.There seems to be a reoccurring trend in all of Mika’s release material which is that they all have their individual them whether it be nature for albums or space. The reason why these colours are used is to attract attention like all of Mika’s release material. Also the bright and vibrant colours mimic the artist’s personality and I believe mood or opinion on what colours represent the gig or event. These colours could also insinuate what era the inspiration for the single comes from and almost replicates Mika’s dress.
This theme is reiterated by such symbols as stars ,silhouettes and the typefaces used which are completely subvert to that of any type of other release material. This is interesting but the reason I believe this method was used was due to the main song of the gig ‘love today’ as the 70’s era was very much orientated around love.
However, the there are some stereotypical features of the poster that been the presence of:-
1. Date of the gig
2. The artist in both capacities ‘Mika’ and ‘Grace Kelly’
3. Most well known song to draw in the audience.
4. Pictures of the artists so that all spectrum of the target audience and other fans know the happening.
All these elements a presented as dominate features on the poster so they are unavoidable to the eye of anyone this is a very clever technique as it almost bullies the general public into noticing what is going on to employ the most powerful method of publicizing which is word of mouth as they generate interest and intrigue to all due to their unconventional approach.

Both posters represent two different approaches; however both have similarities and intertextuality via both posters from previous albums and stereotypical trademarks such as bold colours, cartoons, typefaces such as ‘LIVE in motion picture’ and Mika with the green tapper is and exact replicate of the CD this leads us to be aware of what songs will be performed and therefore creates intertextuality in the mind of the target audience , which automatically attracts the target audience as the decoration techniques are unmistakable for any other artist. Again as with the album produced there is a black and white image of Mika to show he is in a different world and aware of the going on, however there is a twist as it is now of him playing life which shows how he alter his symbols used accordingly e.g. Stars are around the photograph to insinuate his fame.
The colours used again are very important, as the ‘LIVE’ emphasise is replicated in the use of colour, as you can see the taper is green to link with environment, this theme is then instilled by the almost ‘Adam and Eve’ set created with such animals as snakes to enforce his interest in mystical and subvert ideas. The colours are also replicas of that of the album number one to create visible intertextuality and aren’t as stark or bold.
Again the typeface used is that of exact replicas of that of the album whether it be the ‘live in motion’ and ‘Mika’. However what has altered is the size of one aspect of the text ‘LIVE’ ,this is because this poster is acting as a teaser but it also treats the audience as almost dummies to make sure it is not mistaken for a album advert and to show how big the gig will be and with it being in stark black which gives no indication to the nature of the life show and is subvert to any technique used before.
Overall this is a very simple method, yet effective because:-
1. Grabs the audience’s attention
2. The Intertextuality is very strong with all aspects of the teaser such as, colours, typeface, positioning and overall presentational devices.
3. Attracts interest, and the target instantly due to the unique style and presentational techniques it is unmistakable and acts as a trademark.
