The bases of the Scouting Girls Video ‘Heartbeat’, is ingenious as the bases of the video is a school disco which relies on a small scale performance from the band. This again replicates the bands the bands simplistic but successful approach to its designs which creates intertextuality from the album, single to the video.
The scene is set in a village hall or school hall in the 80’s this is a very clever method to use as the indie fashion replicated by the band is now reflected in unauthentic scene which complements the music.
There is a variation of shot types used , the first shot is a low angle shot to a clip board which insinuates who is in charge to a establishing shot of the decoration which states ‘lover’ which together with the name of the ‘heartbeat’ of the song suggests the video and song is about romance. The shots then descend into a close up of the main singer fingers on a piano which starts the introduction of the music, this then leads into a number of circling shots of the band descending into the actual ball and then an establishing shot of the band with the words ‘all alone in your heart’ .The next sequence of shots is then used to tell the story of the song and associates the various forms of love by that of the boys and also the eye line matches is used to associate the genuine like of the performer. Also the over head shot are used to make the sense authentic with various kinds of people dancing in authentic dress.
The main colour of lighting used is that of red which is the colour of love and runs through out of the scene however is not over powering and is cleverly showed to be like dance lights in the hall which creates a powerful ambiance and instill the message or meaning of the song in love.
The dress of the band is stereotypical for the band in indie dress which is then cleverly represented across all the video which is a very clever technique as it creates a fake sense of reality which creates a USP and therefore was very successful as all that was used was live performance from the band , fake disco and some animation in terms of the heart with a beautiful girl in the spot light to make a ratable and successful music video and story.
